Yesterday, my friend from japan visited me and I was surprised he could understand the chinese characters in signboards and hawker centers.

At least now I know the chinese characters are useful for foreigners too. All the hawker people at first spoke to him in cantonese thinking he was a local chinese . :D

They can read the chinese dailies as well, probably laughing about the Chinese girl squatting incident as we speak.

The hawker signboards were all in traditional chinese characters.

I doubt they can read fully the mutilated simplified chinese characters that the local newspapers support.
