Is the crime situation in KL that bad?

Today is the day when I felt embarrassed to be a Msian.

I was having a leisurely breakfast (in Singapore, at my neighbourhood Killiney Kopitiam) when a lady at the next table said loudly to her friends at the same table "You know, lah, my daughter who lives in KL. Her friend's 7-year old daughter was kidnapped just in front of her house in KL. Lucky she was found unhurt, but traumatised. This sort of thing will never happen in Singapore, lah. Our police are too efficient".

She went on to say "Travel to Msia, must be careful, you know. Especially in JB and KL. Don't simply walk anyhow one and wear Rolex. And keep a close eye on your kids at all times".

Has Msia truly come to this? That Singaporeans can comment adversely on the crime situation in KL, and JB? What's the point of our ministers and tourism people assuring all and sundry that Msia is a safe place to visit, when anecdotally, our immediate Singgie neighbours, bless their kiasu mentality are not at all confident about safety here, or about the capabilities (if any) of the Msian law enforcement authorities.

Oh, ya - my friends, who were at my table, looked quizzically at me. Me - I was embarrassed as hell. What's the point of selling Msia as a good place to invest in, live in or retire in when word-of-mouth anecdotes say otherwise.

And this is not the first time I've heard Singgies comment disparagingly about the crime situation in Msia! :(

What's the Msian gahmen doing about this, apart from sending ministers on make-good makan angin trips of apology or setting up yet another Royal Commission or Public Enquiry? We should be demanding results, man!

Sorry, just saw a report in the online edition of the Malay Mail that a member of the Kedah royal family was robbed yesterday of his Mercedes-Benz E220 car right in front of his house in Jln 16/7, PJ. At 1:45pm, for crying out aloud. And he was with his 6-year old daughter in the car when the robbers, wielding parangs and a pistol, struck.

For crying out aloud - this is just a stone's throw away from my friends' place in Jln 16/6C! They are all supposed to be up-market residential areas.

M'sians are getting richer, spent more money buying luxurious items (heck!even s'poreans with strong xchange rate r moving to Kl to stretch their $dolllars) and living in nice houses...sure lah attract the 'have-nots'. By robbing the rich, its easier and faster for them to attain wealth too...the robbers' concept of MEP (Money Easy Policy) and Robber's Agenda lah.

Of course, the cops are too stretched, too poorly paid and too few of them around to patrol everywhere...

Just look around the ladies (and gentlemen) in Singapore, they are all sporting their Rolexes, Cartiers, Patek Phillipe, etc in the open, no fear at all! Even their cars, the Lexus SC430, the CLS, the Porsches, they are everywhere.... No fear of them being stolen or car-jacked!

Here where I live in Brunei is the same. Just look at the people here with their Breitlings, their Rolexes, their cars, the Nissan 350Zs, the CLKs etc, there is hardly any crime here.

So Sir Galahad, it is true. What that lady said at the Killiney Road coffeeshop is true, it is a fact! :mad:


Has Msia truly come to this? That Singaporeans can comment adversely on the crime situation in KL, and JB?Years ago, Lee Kuan Yew was persecuted for writing these down in his affidavit in a case involving an opposition political opponent that JB was full of gangsters and car-jackings... yes, years ago but our mainstream media kept painting rosy picture and told us otherwise.... :mad:

Surely it can't be as simplistic as that. You mean that there are a sub-class of Msians who can't be bothered to find a job and instead resort to robbing people as a means of getting money?

Or are there no jobs available?

Or is it too many illegal immigrants? Who supplement their incomes with a little bit of snatch thefts and armed robbery, with an occasional rape thrown in for kicks?

Either way, it doesn't say much for KL when the expats have to crowd in easily policed neighbourhoods, and when gated, guarded communities are increasingly the choice for middle- and upper-class Msians, and when Gurkha security guards go from being a status symbol to a de regieur !

Perhaps the police and the immigration fellows have just given up? :confused:

Not only in Malaysia there is crime, even Singapore there is crime...there is no place in there world that is without a crime....I have lived in Singapore for 1 year...and the HDB that I lived in, even there is crime. Crime are everywhere, we cannot do anything to stop it. The government only can take action to minimize it but not to stop it.

p/s : there is nothing to shout about on Killiney Kopitiam (At Killiney Road). Been there a few times for tea / lunch... Just a normal kopitiam with beautiful girls parton there...;)

My cousin works in the police force in SIngapore and he complains that his bike got stolen. Even Policeman's bike get stolen. But generally, I think Singapore is much much more safer than Malaysia.

i thought we have one of the lowest unemployment rate in asia,sterling economic growth of 5.3% compared to burma and laos (of course bolehland conveniently forgets to mention that sing registered 9% HK 8% china 10% india 8% thailand 7% in the same period)

drug addiction is one of the lowest in this region,this is again being blown out of proportion by the foreign press etc.

what is the association (causal factor)between population growth and crime?
