About the project

Heart4hope is a project to raise money for a surgery to save my life. Neurofibromatosis Type 2 had caused three tumors to grow in my brain and multiple more along my spine.

My latest need is to remove a tumor (Acoustic Neuroma) that caused hearing loss in the left ear. The surgery can be done in Malaysia, but at a great risk of facial paralysis, scarring tissues, cerebrospinal fluid leakage (csf) and other possible complications.

Very often, Malaysian surgeons fail to remove the tumor entirely. Patients are advised to undergo radiation to stop the residuals from growing further. However, Doctors in the United States advised against radiation for patients of NF2, because the long term result is unknown. Should radiation fail, invasive surgery would be at a much greater risk.

This tumor can grow large enough to push my brainstem out of position, thus distrupting oxygen flow to the brain. It will lead to difficulty in breathing, swallowing, and subsequently death.

Therefore, Iíve decided to be treated at the House Clinic in Los Angeles. The House Clinic is well known for their expertise in hearing science. My doctor at the clinic is able to remove the entire tumor WITHOUT causing facial paralysis, and there will be no CSF fluid leakage. Scarring tissues are also very unlikely.

On top of that, the only hearing aid suitable for my condition is the Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI), which was founded and developed by the House Ear Institute. This technology is not yet available in Malaysia. Conventional hearing aids and cochlear implants are not suitable because of the absence of hearing nerves to the brain.

Fortunately, Dr. Rick A. Friedman and Dr. Wiliam E. Hitselberger at the House Clinic decided not to charge me for surgeon fees. St. Vincent Medical Center is also offering me a discounted package.

The reduced surgery cost + ABI implant = USD58,600.

Even so, the current foreign exchange rate makes the surgery very unaffordable when the price is converted to Malaysian Ringgit.
Hence, I came up with this t-shirt fundraising project.
