Understand we have a thread on this earlier. Hope to raise fresh discussion on this issue

We have been approached to subscribe for private security.
However i have declined to subscribe.

Are these security licenced like Securicor, etc.
Are their employees vetted by police?

Frankly if our police are doing their job properly why do we need
such a 'public' security services.

I can understand if someone need personal private security
services for specific reason and hire a licenced company to do
it for them.

However, i do not feel comfortable when some unknown people or
organization go about canvassing for security business in our neighbourhood hoping for everyone to subscribe to their services.

Also, i do not have the good feeling of seeing flashing lights passing everyday, with our house listed as 'did not pay' on their list.
Some insider might even pass this 'did not pay' list to some associate.

If may be different if the local Resident Association decide to employ additional security services. In such a situation, the committee would have
taken all relevant safeguard matters into consideration before employing them.

Have any our forum members subscribe to these services?
What are your views of these services.

How can we establish some comfort level if we do not subscribe to this privatge security services?

I wonder what is the latest position on this issue by MPSJ or
the police. Has anyone come across any official remarks or comments by MPSJ or the Police of these security services.

Since such security services may have an impact the majority of the residents in someway or the other, MPSJ and the Police should make
some official comments on this issue.

Hi Nic_of_Time, Thank U for starting this post. Yes, we have subscribed to this security before but stopped after we found that the security persons are rude and bold. They have even gone further to lock the side gates with their own lock & chain. Because of this, we are unable to use the gates to go out to the next road after 7pm every night. I am also wondering whether these security companies are legal or not. Do they have the permission from MPSJ to do this ?

lilifjp, what do you mean "lock with their own lock and chain?" Which gates are these? The gates to lock the back lanes? what is there's a fire? I thought those gates are supposed to be open-able by all the residents? You should file a complaint - even make a police report and report to MPSJ...

Aimless, thanks for your concern. Our Taman has been gated by the committee 5 years ago. Backlanes are gated only one side. We also have dead end roads which bicycles can go thru a gate. All those who paid for the initial installation of the gates have keys to access. But now, with the unauthorised security guards, they will lock and chain the gates after 7pm in the evening and open it again at about 9am morning. On public holidays and Sundays, the gates remain locked throughout. It makes it very inconvenient for those who wants to visit relatives in the next section of the Taman. Anyway, it is not fire hazard bcos only one side of the lorong is gated. I have the keys to the old locks but now I have to walk a long distance; passing the main entrance which are controlled by the security guard at night. I now feel like I am staying in a prison area ! With curfews :-<

my goodness lilifjp, i am quite shocked by this. i too am concerned about the safety of you and your fellow residents. even if only one side of the lorong is gated, i still think it's a fire hazard and infringing also on your rights. for safety reasons, you should have all the sides of the lorong available to you. and certainly not at any hours determined by what you call the "unauthorised" security guards.

which taman is this???

i think the whole issue here is that these security guards are "unauthorised." I have heard of this in some areas, like Kota Kemuning as well, these security firms look for "opportunities" and set up operations in areas which are new and unguarded. They then go house to house on their own accord and canvass for support and subscriptions. I fully support security services if it was set up by the neighbourhood watch or committee, but I think doing it on their own accord is really questionable. A lot of people would subscribe out of fear, maybe even out of fear that the company would "arrange" for those who don't subscribe to be targetted...
