There were some complains when C. Fitness opened in 1 Utama that they did not bring in the full range of machines even after opening for some time. We'll jst hv to see how they do at Subang Parade. I also signed up last week, can't wait to try out the new place, heheheh. ;)

I believe jogging 3 km around the house 2-3 times a week is far more effective than all of these fitness centres added together. Cost: RM 0 per month.

Sauna and massage will not add anything to your fitness. It might losen up some strains, but it won't eat any surplus cholesterol or build up your muscles etc.

I agree that some gym machines can do it as long as their focus is on actual exercise.

I believe many, not all, join for reasons other than pure exercising. For some reasons, my wife don't allow me to join one without her tagging along. :D

Ah, I see, for such reasons I go to the Pub, and I dare say it....

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Pub gives me more exercise than those finess centres for those reasons...

Hmm, I see your point. Most of USJ is slightly better, but I guess only slightly.

Pehaps opt for a racket then...squash, badminton or tennis....

But I've learnt something from this thread. I didn't realise before that these fitness clubs are popular not so much for their fitness effect (which is questionable) but for a socialising and chin-wagging....though of course I've heard of gyms as dating and pick-up spots....

....and that in turn explains why they use all these oxymoronic names like 'california fitness' and 'celebrity fitness' etc....

i have tried out both celebrity fitness (in 1U), fitness first (subang branch), n california fitness (d jacky chan wun in midvalley).... so far, i wud say fitness first machines r better in terms of quality, california fitness is ok, celebrity fitness machines really suck la. they r using low grade machines.... sorry to give u negative feedback especially after u have just joined but i was a member of both celebrity n fitness first gyms b4 so just telling u my personal experience.

moreover, d staff turnover at celebrity fitness is high so their service level is not that good. my fren who signed up at d same time as me at celebrity did not receive her membership card yet, n she signed up in february!!! that's more than 7 months la!!! really unbelievable but unfortunately true.... d counter staff gave her d roundabout treatment when she enquired. they couldn't find it, asked her to come back, said they would call her back but never did.... so it is not really efficient lorrr... it is a really fancy place but it is lacking in substance.

i left celebrity fitness (1U), but i'm still a member of fitness first (subang) cos even tho most ppl say that fitness first is kinda like a no frills gym, u do get good quality machines... n their variety of group exercise classes is improving, n their personal trainers know what they r talking about.

california fitness (midvalley) has an additional advantage of havin a swimming pool n a thai kickboxing area but apart from that it is not that much different from d other 2 in terms of what they offer.... they r however different in dat their membership fee is very high.... even tho their monthly subscription rate is lower....

true fitness (in sri hartamas) i have not checked out yet, n will do so soon.... :)

hahaha, I initially faced that resistance from the wife, she kept nagging me about the expensive monthly dues and my true 'intentions', but after a while she has accepted it and appreciate that I take care of my health, for the family's sake. In fact both of us have become more health conscious ever since I started my exercise regime again, after about 10 yrs of sedentary lifestyle.

After reading arwen's account of Celebrity fitness, I'm a bit worried
:(. I've not stepped into CF at 1U b4 and the thought did cross my mind b4 I signed up but then I knew I wont come back to sign up unless I do right there n then so that's what I did. Anyway, just give it a try if it doesn't work out we'll hv more choices by then.

Some ppl may think that we go there for the social thing but those type of crowd r mainly the young n the trendy types. There r a small percentage of members who are serious body builders and an equal % of us are just there for fitness, nothing else.

Gym is one of the ways to keep fit, some of us prefer weights and machines than running in parks or streets and being exposed to the elements, traffic, dust and all that jazz! I've been training with weights on and off (more 'off' than 'on' though) since freshman year in U, but never really taken it that seriously or else I would look more like Hulk Hogan than a guy with soft belly now, hehehehee. :D

Heck, I used to go to a gym in the dark corner of a university stadium basement every day, even in winter, during the 80's, and a sweaty smelly rusty muscle gym in a shop lot back in the 90s. Now, any extra 'benefits or sights and sounds' we see at modern fitness centers are purely coincidental. ;) :D

I stopped going to gym for awhile ago ... i think my last gym was in Mega Hans ... right above Yat Wo Rest. and another is in Fitness Network ... is in subang mewah ...

I think it's time for me to join the gym again, before i really looked like 3 months pregnant ...

After all the comparisons, i think True Fitness, should be a worth while joining gym for me, since it's so near my hse. :D

I guess this would be a good thread to post regards ladies aerobics classes.

A group of ladies are looking for a new aerobics place to join.. their regular one at Taman Sea is apparently winding down.. its quite disheartening for them ..considering they been having regular morning classes there for past two years..

They are looking around for a new place to join.. celeb fitness did come as a possibility.. how do the charges compare .. do they have different charges for just aerobic sessions?

any other suggestions? they would need regular aerobic classes and also some decent gym equipment.

My 0.02 sen, those looking for love in fitness centres may face some challenges. Ladies take note, most good looking men in fitness centres are gay. Almost all the trainers and instructors are gay.

How to spot the straight men? easy....blokes who cannot dance to the tune or having difficulty following choreographed steps :D

Very true. I dunno about celeberity fitness, but you can find many at the Kelana Jaya public pool. Just go into the male toilet. Take a look under the cubicle door you'd find 2 pairs of male legs. Go into a cubicle, and you'd find a male head staring at you from above. If you're lucky. All this for only RM1 per entrance (2 yrs ago) :D

arwen, perhaps you can be more specific on the sub standard machine between FF and CF.

Personally, for cardio workout, as long as the machine has the built in Heart Rate Monitoring, that's very good. And also wide range of machines for cardio such as Treadmill, Bike, Ski and Steps.

I am a Fitness First Member. I usually prefers their X-Group Classes and if you count the no of classes you could attend in a month, it is actually so much cheaper. I know I am a bit fanatic but I used to take 3 to 4 classes a day on weekdays and most of my weekends are spent in FF with 5 or 6 classes. For most ladies I know, they admitted to save more after joining FF as they go shopping less. Moreover, members encouraged each other to stay healthy and exercise regularly which is good for our health.

Agree with you. For instance, if you attend 5 times weekly, it'd come to RM8.25 per session if you're paying RM165 monthly. However, if you're going only twice weekly, it'd come to RM20.60 per session. It all depends on the individual, do ya want it to be cheap or expensive.

have not been to california fitness or celebrity fitness, but i can say that i'm quite satisfied with Fitness First... good machines, and the staff and trainers are good too - turnover rate doesn't seem very high at all.. personally, i would say that the headphones and 6 astro channels help a lot - keeps your mind off the monotony of the cardio workout. don't know if the other fitness chains have that, but personally, i would say that if they don't - don't join!

Most of us do exercise whether at our own leisure time or go to gym which is good for our cardiovascular. BUT how effective is your workout or it just another routine? Sad to say, most people FAIL to PLAN exercising effectively especially for weight management.

Heart rate is the most accurate measurement of your intensity or your exertion level. Therefore having a Heart Rate Monitor whether built in with the machine or wearing a watch is quite essential to exercise effectively. Below is the formula:

Max Heart Rate (220) – Age = Your Max Heart Rate

Key Target Zone

60 – 70% of YMHR – Good for weight loss, building endurance and recovery
70 – 80% of YMHR – Good for improving cardiovascular fitness
80% + of YMHR – Interval workout

Example, a 30 year old male object has a max heart rate of 190 (Max Heart Rate {220} – Age {30}), and objective of exercising is weight management, he has to maintain his heart rate between 114 – 133 AND the DURATION in order to be effective. Duration will determine the burning rate.

In order for the 30 year old male heart rate to arrive at the weight loss target zone, it may take him 15 minutes of exercising and sad to say there’s no benefit out from there. The burning will only clocked in on the 16th minute! And the duration after the 16th minute will determine the burning rate. This is just an example, please don't quote me! :p

Famous quote from the internet:

“A heart rate monitor is a tool that will help pace you. If you exercise too hard, you will most likely quit before you get the real benefit. We have all seen the person who gets on the treadmill, cranks it up to 8% grade and 8 mph, runs full out for 2 minutes, and gets off. ALL THEY DID WAS WASTE TWO MINUTES OF THEIR TIME!”

Good day everyone.

Hi Fatslab

Never realise exercise can be come so techincal and complicated..the less I know the better ;) ..I just jog around my neighbourhood and times do uphill cycling. Whenever in the Malls I avoid the lifts and escalators. At times use public transport for exercise and sightseeing. Eat in moderation and dont stick to the same diet I try out news foods, and no synthetic supplements of course. This way I mantain my endurance and good health.

Anyway thanks for the information, it is very interesting to know all this too. :)

Ski, it's not complicated at all. All you need to know is your heart rate response while you are exercising and that will help you to stay on track.

arwen, perhaps you can be more specific on the sub standard machine between FF and CF.

Personally, for cardio workout, as long as the machine has the built in Heart Rate Monitoring, that's very good. And also wide range of machines for cardio such as Treadmill, Bike, Ski and Steps.

with treadmills u probably can't feel much difference, but on d cycles n resistance weights.... for triceps, biceps, hamstrings, abdominal muscles.... after trying out both centres, u will feel d difference.... maybe some ppl may not notice it, but CF ones kinda feels like d ones in those cheap machines in sold in some shopping centres.

even if u adjust them 2 d max, they r badly fit n u may end up causing injury instead of toning ur body.... which was mainly why i stopped goin there.... that plus all d complaints from my fren who waited more than 6 months for her membership card.... n i think she is still waitin.... that kinda inefficiency really turns me off....

Err...been invited to join the fitness centre at 3K complex...by a dear friend n forumer here...ahem...not that Orchi is in real need for any workout to tone up the body...but might give it a due consideration...only because...it could tone up a bit more...on Orchi's already...err...somewhat lean n fit physique...cheh!:o

FF (subang) also has a lot of problems, which is probably the reason why I stopped going there.

Used to workout at FF (SPK) in KL, but getting there took too long.

I'm concerned that FF equipment doesnt work to its full potential. For example, heart rate monitors dont work on the elliptical machines.

I also dont like that FF (subang) people start shutting down the club at 930 and its very crowded in the evenings.

My biggest complaint was this: There were issues with my debit payment which led to my FF account being suspended. At no time in 3 mos. did anyone from FF call me and ask me why things arent working. One time I went to workout and one of the ladies in the front desk promised to call me and get info for me...never did call me.

So, I give up on FF and prepare for Cel.F.

As for Cel.F., I'm not too excited about the appearance. Saw the Penang club recently: dark carpeting, plastic platforms, floor lighting...like something out of a nightclub...some people see fitness centres as a hangout and pickup place. That is what Cel.F. looks like.

My take on this is pretty simple. I want good, safe machines most of all.

Fact is, if we are paying a "premium price" (RM150/month is not a small amount of money) then we should receive premium service!

Ah, revisiting this thread, after Cel Fitness opened in Subang Parade for more than a month, and having used both 1U and Sbg Parade clubs regularly and a brief walk thru at their Pg Gurney Plaza club, all I can say is, the quality and quantity of equipment is superior to FF in most cases, though they're short of some special machines FF has but they hv more of certain machines not avail in FF too. And it is a lot less crowded than any FF clubs.

Yes, there are lots of ppl in CF but I've never encountered all machines fully occupied nor having a free weight area jam packed with muscle bound guys/gays. :D There's always plenty of room(shall I say: floor space) for u to workout. Whereas in FF sometimes u got to rub elbows with those 120kg musclemen! Having more floor space really helps. And CF don't start to shut the club down half an hour b4 closing time like FF.

I'm not keen on group x classes, only class I attended was RPM and it gave me a pain in the butt literally, haven't cycled competitively for over 15 yrs, no wonder. Maybe it's high time to get back into those padded cycling shorts. OMG, u young ppl wldn't want to see an uncle like me in tights, kekekeek :o

2 things I don't like in CF though, the disco lights and the loud music, sometimes with songs spewing R rated words.

No gay sightings in CF so far though I heard they're everywhere ;) (and no I'm not a gay basher, I try to treat everyone equally) :D

Those who like to work out in a quiet environment should go to Celebrity Fitness at 1 Utama on weekends. Normally very quiet especially in the evenings/nites. Not so many prying eyes...hee.

My friend invited me to Celebrity Fitness to try the 14-day trial but I ended up being allured to sign up as a member. Their monthly charge is $149/month but on signing the agreement you have to pay $99 for processing fee and another $149 for the last month of a 12 month period. In total nearly $400 upon registration. You have to remember if you decide to cancel your membership prior the 12 month period you have to pay for an additional $188 for processing fee. I decided to cancel my membership after 2 visits to the gym and upon talking to the Operations Manager at Subang Parade, it seems that I will have to pay the $188 and the additional $149 is not refundable. I told her it is not fair for me since I came with the intention for a 14 days trial but the marketing guy insisted me on signing up. They did not actually give me a chance to experience the place first but was more interested in getting the money first. To all who is thinking of joining, think about the commitment that you have pay for the first year. I really think there's really no customer service in this business when all they care is getting the money and not following what the customer wants. I wanted to try out the 14 days trial and now I end up wasting nearly $600 for my cancellation. They should have been more people oriented than money oriented. That is what they say in their agreement. Since I have signed the agreement, my words of dissatisfaction could not go against their non-refundable policy. :(

my colleague helped me to buy a RM25 one month free trial of FF comes together with a free Personal Trainer for one session and body fat analysis. while talking to the consultant there, they had offered me a corporate rate of RM150 per month for passport...hmm,,,do u guys think is worth it ? Today actually is my 6th day there...been going there almost everyday..is so convienent to me as is just next to my office...even after office hours can just go there have a drink and read newspaper. (at the mean time, wash eyes lar)

but today, i had a bad experience at FF, I had sent an email to them and they called me immediately. let me share with you guys the content of the email..

To whom who may concern,

I am VERY UNHAPPY over the service been provided by your club. I bought the RM25 one month voucher and had book a personal training session since last Tuesday, but until today you guys still have not confirm with me. I went to your club and even called but yet, still cannot confirm with me.

In your brochure, you mentioned that I need to make at least 2 days advance booking, but now I am gave you all around 5 days, but yet still no reply. Your receptionist are not helpful enough. Advice me to change another date or even say that call back after 2.30 and also have the guts to tell me that maybe only.

What is going on here ? Are you guys serious enough to provide such service ? I am taking this one month trail period to see how efficient and effective of Fitness First, too bad, you guys had already given me a very bad impression already.

The trainer had called me and arranged a session for me on Thursday...

Now in the midst of training myself for the Singapore Marathon..(company sponsering :D:D )

hmm..so what you guys think...me just wanna some suggestion...

To join FF for RM150 permonth passport or go to others centre.

Pro : Is just next to my office and can do a light work out before work start.

A friend of mine is having a hard time trying to suspend her membership at Celebrity Fitness for a few months due to her pregnancy. They wanted an "admin fee" of RM 38 / month. That's RM 342 for 9 months - daylight robbery!

She's blogged about it, including a similar experience from her workout partner.

used to join fitness first (summit). not bad for the machines n classes, n the fact that free drinks r provided as compared to celebrity but i hate the traffic going there. besides, it operates till 10pm only n by the time i finished work, go through the jam n all, there wont be any classes left n not much time if i plan to do some exercises, sauna, steam bath n bath. so i quit fitness first.

then when true fitness opened in taipan, i checked it out. place is not bad, has more classes especially yoga which others dun offer n operates till 12am. however, only disadvantage is parking is difficult to find n the fees is slightly more expensive.

just joined celebrity fitness. didnt think it was great but i like the fact that i can just drop by after work n skip the jam back to usj. its classes r ok too but the only thing is the bathroom that i'm not happy about. u can see that they tried to save cost there as compared to fitness first. shower curtains, no hangers, the water pressure is not high enough, n neither warm enough. n u have to bring ur own lock. troublesome, i'd say, but on the bright side, it feels safer than those in fitness first whereby u know they have the access to all lockers, n here u can actually take more than 1 locker. just bring more locks. another advantage is for u guys out there who wants to do some serious body-building, the cafe sells supplement drinks. convenient even for gals like me who goes with an empty stomach.

overall, each gym has its own pros n cons n it all depends on ur own discipline. my only advise is to make sure u r comfortable with the location n for those who plans to go after work, true fitness n celebrity would be a better choice for their longer operating hours.

I am a loyal FF supporter, joined since 2003 =) I pay RM175 monthly for my passport membership... regret didnt get passport when I first join, coz that time only RM165. Last time it used to be very packed at FF Consplant, now less ppl coz got more choices now =) Good for members though, hahaha... But the equipment are quite run down. Although they do changed out the old quipment... but it took them long time to do that & maybe they only changed out after a lot of complaints from the members..

Also went to try out California Fitness at Midvalley coz my fav cardio dance instructor cabut to Cali, dont really like it... the classes is so full... & of coz the location is too far for me... & the membership consultant is soooo funny... I still remember when I told her I wont join coz its too far for me & usually fed hiway will be jam after office hours.. She told me - then you dont come after office hours lah.... hello... If I dont go after office hours, then I should go during office hours???
