My daddy's best.

Fried kangkung with canned black dace fish.
Bittergourd soup with whatever meat he could find in the fridge and lotsa garlic.
Fried 'siew yook'.
Steamed rice with chinese liver and chinese sausages. On top.
He's also best at peeling petai and expect all of us to eat them raw!

Some other dishes by my mum.

Salted and century eggs steamed with minced meat. She makes her own salted eggs.
Sweet Ham choy with prune sos, fresh chilies, dark taufu and meat.
Fried fish with 'tauchu' and lotsa ginger and nice gravy to go with rice.

Anyone else care to share? Could you remember your mum's/dad's best cooking? Something she/he looks forward to cooking for you and knowing you would love it each time?

My mum's best Curry Chicken. She picks the ingredients herself. Best in the world! She makes very good Pan Mee too, go with chili padi, soya sauce and lime. Better than my wife's cooking but she's picking up la. :D My father doesn't cook. He just eats and eats and eats. Like me :D

Hmm ... my dad's memorable cooking is those chinese 'lap cheong' fried ... it's so hard that when u accidentally drops it at our own toe .. IT HURTS!!! :(

His fried eggs ... is his special half half .. which means i side is the yoke so dried that i dun even hv to break it .. another side is jz dark face .. :o

Well, as for maggie mee .. i wud jz prefer to eat outside or self-cook if i can help it .. cos if my dad does it .. maggie wif soup .. will end up the soup is all dry up .. then it's oni the maggie noodle in the pot .. :o

Haha ... that's a one time thing to ask my dad to cook .. :D Anyhow, he's still my greatest dad!!! ;)

Yah..my dad is something like your dad too. Just great..
Mine would expect us to 'finish up' all the dishes ('finish up' as in other words wash after he cooks!) :p and you could hear him yelling for the pepper, salt, sugar etc from the kitchen whenever he cooks! hehe...but he's still great lor..and he cooks well I must say.. :D and they say most good cooks are skinny but this fella (my dad) is different. He's like the tenor Pavarotti..big, fat, round round..so imagine him yelling! :p

My mom's Kueh Teow Th'ng is the best. I like also the chili sauce she made very delicious. Her dry curry chicken is also the best. I still ta pau frozen in few smaller packets whenever back to Pg; to be eaten few rounds. Come to think of them, my saliva already starts dripping ... sorry :D :p

Yah..home-cooked is always best. Just wonder, do your mums/dads use ajinomoto? Mine does but very minimal. Sometimes mum substitutes ajinomoto with sugar. tastes just as good..My dad on the other hand, never touches ajinomoto..says he prefers his children's hair to look normal. :p

(She got inheritance from my grandma) :D

- Hokkien Char

- Si Yau Kai (Oyster sauce chicken w/ mushroom)
- My mom's Steamboat w/ own varieties rather than outside standard
- Mom's soup ... hehe .. that's superb
- Beef & Chicken Spagetti
- Mum's long ago sambal fish (its been ages now since i get to eat)
- Lap Cheong & normal fried eggs
- Mom's omelette add w/ luncheon meat / lap cheong
- Yun Thai
- Mom's Tu Ka Chor (Chu Keok Cho)
- Mom's Fried Kuey Teow
- Mom's Fried Bee Hoon
- Mom's Fried Rice *yum* *yum* :p

Errmmm ... may I ask how abnormal can a hair be? The only abnormal thing which I can think of is having hair and not having any hair at all ... :D

Nowadays if you look around ... there are many bald guys in town ... so what is your verdict on that? Are they having the whole aji on them

Hey mon, do you cook too? I seriously dun ... the only thing i can cook is a packet of maggie ... :o

mon
07-11-2005, 10:59 AM
Thanks for the list Kokomo! I can cook, that's what everyone says...but some cannot eat one.. :o hehe....but I'm learning, now trying to perfect some dishes like Si Yau Kai (one of your mum's best!), curry chicken, lotus roots with pai kuat, err..better not bore you to death! Most egg, vege dishes and soups are ok, I'm just horrible at cooking seafood unless it's the soupy type...cos I could dump the whole thing into the pot! hehe..

and yes, I cook good maggi too.. which reminds me of the simplicity of just having luncheon meat and a vege for dinner at times.. :)

My verdict? Nah...I don't think aji contributes to hair loss problems..not scientifically proven yet..my dad is just an aji-phobic...however, I do believe that it's possible to manage or improve certain conditions through what we eat...and the lifestyle we live...

mon, maggie very simple only .. no luncheon n vege .. jz maggie wif added eggs in it .. stir it right , u get something like shark fin soup texture ... wif the maggie of cos .. :D

another way is , indo mee .. put in 2 packets since it's such a small portion for me .. add fried egg or wateva left-over my mom kept for me .. that'll do the trick too .. :p hmm .. i wonder if maggie wif abalone does it taste good  well, it's a home cook thingy .. so anybody can put in anything according to their liking ..

oh yeah, speaking of lotus roots .. i jz luvs that soup .. i wonder if u understand the white carrot (pak lobak) soup .. it's nice too ..

if anyone has got 'loi siong' (internal injury) best ask your mom make tis 'tin chat' soup for u .. it's nice and it cures ..

My mum's best dishes
Fried beef. It's simple but just delicious!! Thin slices of beef marinated in black sauce, with a dash of oyster sauce and some pepper. Leave it overnight and then fry...WOW!! :D

Herbal chicken wrapped in aluminum foil...when it is opened, the aroma of herbs and spices just floats in the air.....then peel into the soft, juicy succulent flesh.....

Can't think anymore...too hungry now :p

Anyway, a little bit on the real hunting thing. My dad has a license for deer-hunting at the Garden State (if I remember correctly) in New Jersey with his bow, muzzleloader and one shotgun :) ..so you could guess, one of his favourite dish would be cooking the deer meat. Told him it's pretty sadistic and now, he hasn't been doing it.

Haha Kokomo..it might just come true for you, having to stay quietly at home..and make sure you draw an X with red paint so we'll know..that's where you live and come and get ya :p

Hehe..just kidding :D ..for now..

Chermaine! I missed you too, where have you been all these while...:o

Thanks for sharing..Do you cook like your mum? :p

Heheheh..so sweet of you Mon...miss me :p

My mom mee siam is spicy with lots of shrimp..and dry prawn and "tou gek" ......salivating.......

Too bad I don't cook like my mom! Before married I normally take care of housework (don't like to cook) and my younger sister takes care of cooking (she loves cooking and hates doing housework)! So, basically I don't cook and show no interest! After I married, somehow, some incidents I knew is time for me to learn cooking. So, I cook like my mother in law not my mom :o

Ok...now its my turn. My mother makes the best *see below* in the world. Her cooking is excellent but these are her specialties....

Sambal hay-bee (I NEVER eat other people's sambal hay-bee, only my mom's.)
Acar (Penang style)
Ju Hu char with sambal belacan and daun salad (only during CNY)
Duck soup (only during CNY)
Chicken and ginger wine soup (thick and sweet)
Kerabu sotong
Baked Fish with tom yam and chilli paste.
Ikan gulai tumis (like assam fish but more oomph!)
Masak Lemak with cabbage, ubi kayu and prawn.
Bak-kut and vegetable curry (Indian style)
Chicken Varuval
Pumpkin (Indian Style)

She also makes the best:-
Kaya
Pineapple jam tarts
Tau-foo-far and tau-cheong-sui
Agar-agar (cooked with eggshell and dried in the sun for 2 weeks)
Indonesian layer cake

I usually go back to my mom's for dinner about once a week or every fortnight. And when I do, I'll tell her what I want to eat and she'll masak for me!! She will normally cook both me and loh-kong's favourite dishes.

Everyone has been commenting that my mom should do catering or something, but she's not interested. I'm trying to convince her to do small part-time busines. I'll ask her to make the Indonesian Layer cake and bring some during the next teh-tarik session for all to try.

Hi In, I like Indonesian Layer cake ! But can't really find one that I actually like here after tasted the one that bought from Medan many years ago and is expensive here. The layer cake that I bought from Bali this year is not good at all :( Do you think your mum will consider baking it for sale on special request? :D
By the way, how is this agar agar cooked with eggshell looks and taste like?

in
15-11-2005, 05:28 PM
Kokomo, chicken varuvel is like dry curry chicken. (Indian style)

Evelynlim. I can guarantee that my mom's Indonesian layer cake is excellent! If its on special request, I don't think she'll mind. Its expensive because of 2 reasons - the ingredients ie. 3 to 4 times more the amount of eggs compared to normal eggs. Its also very time consuming, because you cook it layer by layer, it can take up to 2 or 3 hours - and you have to jaga by the oven. I'll ask her how much she wants to charge.

As for the jelli recipe. Its in the recipe thread. Go check it out. Unfortunately its not very detailed.
