Just some thinking.........who knows?........ :D

? there have been cases of houses built under high tension wires.... by poles i'm assuming the large metal structures that hold the wires?

it has not been proven that its dangerous but i wouldn't want to live nearby a high tension wires if given a choice...

The electromagnetic fields generated by high tension wires are so strong that they can light up Fluorescent light bulbs placed under them. Now, if that isn't alarming, I don't know what is. That much electromagnetic energy floating around like that isn't good no matter how you look at it. Then add in the fact that they cause headaches at best and cancer at worst, oh wait, we forgot interfere with cellphones as well as pacemakers, and you can see why we just don't. In fact, building them near the darned things is bad enough.

Somebody was saying the emf (electro-magnetic field generated by passing current) will lead to cancer........is that true......any scientific proof?

I've known for instance those squaters that build their houses using zinc are most prone to be hit by lightning........due to the nature of zinc composition as a conductor........

Are there any real reason with regards to the subject?? :D

Just some thinking.........who knows?........ :D

Why not ? If you are able to shield the EM field down to zero in theory none other than just some cheap metal from your backyard...:D One drawback is that you may not be able to use your radio or mobile , unless you have an aerial sticking out of your cozy cocoon...:p

It's called death by cellphone. Haven't you heard?

In any case, the EM waves will interfere with the cellphone signals anyway, so, reception will be bad regardless.

How can you build a house under the high tension wire... one thing for sure, all the land below it belongs to TNB - 1 chain wide, and along the national grid, they are 2 chains wide. (1 chain = 66ft).

you sure? i vaguely recall some high tension wires crossing or are very near residential areas.... i can't remember where but think it was near/along the LRT tracks.

This is a secondary reason. The primary is will you build or not build a house under a high tension wire.

Houses bordering the TNB reserve can commonly seen. It all depends on the developer who wants to maximize their earnings.

For public amenities (LRT/KTM tracks and roads) to criss-cross below the wires, it's allowed to do so under planning guideline. If not, then how?

Imagine the wire snaps, what happens if there are houses built there? Even TNB doesn't build their staff quarters beneath it............

So, logic says it aloud

wire snaps... people die... then some idiot will say something about prevention... then sweep under the rug... rinse and repeat as necessary

Whose fault is it then TNB or Developer ? Don't know how the occupants feel under such em fields...

in the case of the LRT's i think the houses were there earlier and the gomen just try and squeeze in the power supply for LRT's...

As far as I am concern, under the land code, gomen(in this case TNB) can acquire lands to build infrastructure by paying compensation to the land owner.

But as you say it ..... Malaysia Boleh....

It's disheartening sometimes when we try to stick to policies, but the policy makers act adversedly.

Btw.....did anyone knows anyone stealing power supply straight from these poles.........don't they actually need a transformer to step down the high voltage.........i heard lotsa factories on such crime........are they tampering with the meter or using the method i mentioned earlier.......

Err...it is impossible to erect or maintain the high tension cable towers...n having to run the many cables...directly above n over any obstructions like houses...impossible!

Ahem...lika Saudari Achee:) said...the land beneath them towers n cables(each~15,000V~22,000V)...is off limit...n even any attempts to plant a banana tree under them...would be considered as unlawful trespassing...on reserved land or property...n of course be punishable by law... :o

Yes that is the ideal law n rules set out to regulate such structures . But you can see such rules being broken without much of a blinker from the enforcer. See nothing wrong when no one say anything wrong even if it is wrong right in front of their very eyes....

in singapore, where they are short of land, their high tension wires are all planted underground. may i ask what are the dangers then of living above, near these underground high tension wires?

same as in malaysia?

kress
26-10-2005, 04:03 PM
not an electrician but i think if underground should not be so bad? since the earth will dampen the EMF.. also have to know how far underground it is

What do you mean, transmission lines !!! surely not, land belongs to TNB, why ask for trouble?

The high tension cable which can be 132kV causing EM field that can cause health problem. Of course, we are not sure what is the voltage of the cable, some are high voltage, some do not.

For layman example, if 415kV cable is too low let say for example about 15 feet from the ground and anyone standard below may feel the EM field and if lower than 15 feet our hair may point upwards and if that happen, better run. Sparks from these cables will kill a person.

Therefore, don't play play. I just talk like a layman but many many years back I did work in this environment, ABB.

Usually cables are of these voltage ratings 11 kv 33 kv 66 kv 132kv 275kv and 500kv and all carry potent danger, keep away. In Perak its 22 and 33 kv ratings.

Hahaha :D ........not some kinda sicko joke..........my boss thot of buying a house at Bandar Puteri, Klang.........and he saw those transmission line quite near to a dream house........so he ask me this question.........in my study of Power Engineering......which was few yrs back......and currently working in another different field.........i have little memories of such case or rather knowledge...........

So......that's why i ask........ ;) .......not that i have a liking for being electrocuted/magneticly modified by electric wave.......hehehe  ..........in case many of us never thot of this Q..........this will be a good knowledge whatsoever........see so many smart ppl in usj.com.my although hardly many are specialist in the field itself.........

Thanks!! :) .....i do not know something yesterday.....so i ask......now i learn something......u learned as well........hihihihi :D

So that our life sparks ;) ........ever seen a person kena short-circuit....... .....and still survive to tell the story.......i've seen someone got hit by lightning and burnt to death........true story......

And someone here (tryagain) working in ABB (ASEA Brown Boveri)......m i rite......what kind of work u do over there......i remember when i was working in Amsteel Mills yrs ago......we hired a specialist (a Swedish) to service our transformer........ .......kind of thinking how yrs has gone by........real fast...... :D

Most Chinese people would advise against buying a house next to a transmitter station or high-tension wires - bad energy so bad feng shui.... any budding Lillian Too out there who wants to elaborate? :D

This question of living near high tension cables had been asked all over the world. Studies have been inconclusive - just like questions on the use of mobile phones and its effects on the brains of users. Nonetheless, it is generally accepted that one should stay away from prolonged exposure to overhead high tension cables - just to play safe.

However, have anyone taken a drive past the shopping complex near OUG (used to be Yaohan) and proceed on the internal dual carriage way that leads you to Happy Gardens? Along the way you will find the TNB high tension line running parallel to the road on your right. Right under the high tension lines, in between the pylons, are 2 plant nurseries which sell potted plants. These 2 businesses have been in operation for donkey's years. Perhaps they have TNB permission to use the land between the pylons but the point here is that the nursery owners don't seem to have any problems working there day in and day out. So, maybe it is safe after all?

What about Subang Jaya lake where joggers run around the lake next to the commuter train line? One part of the jogging tract is directly under the high tension cables of TNB. Anyone complained of discomfort jogging round the lake?

Go past SJMC, towards Holiday Villa. Then turn left before entering Holiday Villa. You will find 2 lakes. One with jogging track and the other one next to "Crocodile Farm" restuarant (assume it is still there, haven't been many years oredi) where anglers pay to fish.

Is this true, the transformer is the property of TNB how could he tamper with it without knocking out the supply, only TNB staff are authorised to do repairs and maintenance.

R u sure ski.......this is private property and nothing to do with TNB.......even the power sub-station and generators are maintained by staff at the company and i believe (all companies).......myself was maintenance engineer there for few months......haha.....only authorise to maintain anything 3-phase (415V) and single phase (240V).......haven't thot of taking chargemanship to operate higher KV..........

I m not sure where this guy from ABB is working but I saw ABB office from KESAS.......near Kompleks Hamodal, Subang........

And btw.......Amsteel at Kawasan Perindustrian Bukit Raja........cannot imagine myself working there for more than a yr..........i was under Steel Melt Shop (SMS)........taking care of the electrical facilities.......the condition i wud describe as hazardous..........the noise of the deafening electric arc melting the scraps.....wah lau eh.......even with ear plug oso sakit telinga.........and have to climb up overhead cranes.........more than 5 stories high and some more sometimes no handrail..........and the walk way just 2 metres width........u see down......and feel like falling........

And u just have to walk thru dust and dust of carbons and .........and have to wear a face mask..........oso thick thick jacket........5000 deg celcius.....terribly hot......... .........but the ppl there very nice and supportive........i owe them a big THANK U!!! :D

When i was 15kg lighter and living in ss15 , i used to jog along the subang lake near by living place then..Got a lot of people there , even kids with parents cycling there in certain time in the evening..and of course fishing..etc..Can ran behind nice people and get encouragement too:D

Wow , when ran along the TNB pylons ,can see the things are HUGE ! LIke monster like that..The legs got bard wire circling them..i guess to prevent children climbing them and adults stealing scrap metals?... When i stand below also scarely..very big ah..

i feel under normal situation hardly any sane people will build house under them?Crazy oh.. ...Imagine when thunder storm..Not sane to sit under so much of metal  ..Fried banana oh..

What are the odds..but it happens. Don't they,TNB have some kinda safety cut-off thingy that prevents this kinda accident from recurring? I don't know.. it could be an accident for someone else in the future.
What a horrid way to die..
In many countries..a utility can be sued for not providing adequate protection at its meters.. if someone is killed while stealing energy.

There are numerous warning signs on the fence and on the gate, this numbskulls asked for it, this is not the only instance, they even steal high tension towers too!! Stealing is a grave offence but at times you get killed doing so.

The thief who was trying to rob my neighbours gates lost his fingers by doing so, you cant blame the neighbours!!!

whatever... safe or not...not many people want to buy a property situated near these pylons. so they dont have any re-sale value
