Eating Out with Patrick
My Best Kept Secret.........
A secret love up in the Highlands...
Posted on 12.00am May 26, 2007
I went up to the Camerons for my holiday break no less than 10 times in 2006. And I kept having the questions popping up again and again. What the heck do you do in Camerons? Why did you go up there so often? You got a mistress or something there?
Ok...finally I have decided to share with you my best kept secret. It's my secret love for......You Hoo. You who? You Hoo!! Yeah, you heard it right. You Hoo Seafood Rest in Brinchang, Camerons is one of my top favourite restaurants in Malaysia, if not the top!
Ok...what's so good about You Hoo? They are the only restaurant that serves my favourite kind of fish...Indonesian style. I have never ever tasted anything like it anywhere and I yearn for it every now and then like a pregnant lady! Ha ha!! Just looking at the pic makes me salivate!!
So whenever I am up in the Camerons, I am like dinner in You Hoo first nite, You Hoo 2nd nite and You Hoo every nite till I leave the Highlands!! Yeah...it's an understatement to say I am really crazy over that place and their food. I have spent so much time eating there, the boss Ah Chai(or Ah Choy) has now become a dear friend. It's a family restaurant run by Ah Choy and wife at the front, with his chef brother in the kitchen. That means the food is consistently good. The only problem I have when I am there is not knowing what to dig in with the limited time there. Should we have dishes and rice or steam boat? And if fried dishes, we have problem deciding. My fav of course is the Indonesian fish, then it's the hot plate ostrich or deer meat. Or should I order the buttered cray fish (lai lieu har)? And then what vege should we have. Considering the range of fresh vege available, aiyah...hard to make up the mind! To make it more difficult, Ah Choy would even order something special if he knows we are in town.
So the next time you visit Camerons and You Hoo, make sure you look for Ah Choy and tell him you are my friend. Just so that you get better service and value for money. Of course you can have lunch there too, but we usually tend to have late and heavy breakfast. So we tend to skip lunch and have early tea instead at one of our favourite spots amongst the tea valleys. We usually have our favourite scones either at T-Cafe or Smoke House in Tanah Rata or at the cafe in Sg Palas Tea Plantation, where we often laze away the afternoon.
And no, You Hoo dont do breakfast. We usually have breakfast just a few doors away at the Hong Kong Rest where you can get almost anything for breakfast! The handsome hubby and wife team serve damn good curry chicken chee cheong fun! Here you can have western or asian breakfast.
So now my secret's out! Hope you folks will enjoy Camerons like I always do. But stay away from that place during weekends and particularly school and public holidays. It's a mad rush and one big jam everywhere!
You Hoo Seafood Restaurant is located at No. 3, Jalan Besar, Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. Tel: 05-4911726. (The block of shophouse next to the Shell station.)
Aiyohh...must find the time to go to Camerons again...
ps. if you luv chilli sauce, especially with the buttered
lai lieu har (pee shrimps!), you can have the Kampong
Woh chilli sauce. But if you want my favourite, ask for
their home made chili sauce which they serve with steam
boat. Wah lau...heavenly man!!
