On arriving in Seattle, I proceeded straight to Malay Satay Hut, a Malaysian restaurant owned and run by Malaysians Sam and Jessy. In fact, (what do you know?) they are Subang Jayans!

I had heard much about their popularity amongst the Asian community here and after being away from civilization for the previous two weeks (away in the Alaskan wilderness), it was something I did naturally without much persuasion.

Located at 212 12th Avenue south, Seattle (Tel: 206 324 4091), Satay Hut received raving review by John Hinterberger, a food critic from the Seattle Times in 1997. And one can appreciate why.

The first time I was there, amongst other dishes we had a big plate of udang galah which had just been flown in from Malaysia. It was cooked with just the right blend of sambal and sauce and tasted really good. (Or was it that I was just plain desperate for Malaysian food??) It cost about US$16 a plate but the portion was sizeable. There must have been at least eight huge udang galahs!

The second time I went there was on a Sunday at about 3pm. And guess what? It was really packed with a long queue waiting for seats. Running out of time, we ordered for take away some simple fried rice and noodles. The Hokkien fried mee was ordinary but the fried rice was good, with just the right garnishing of salted fish, and sambal belachan.

Satay Hut's menu is wide and varied. One can get even achar, ABC and even roti canai! So, the next time you are out in the north west region of the US, don't forget to drop by Satay Hut and lend support to a fellow Subang Jayan!
